How to Apply Gel-X and Soft Gel Tips
A full set should survive three weeks of car doors and shampoo bowls. When it does not, the cause is almost always sizing or prep, not the gel. Here is the whole procedure with the cure time on every step.
A soft gel tip is a cured gel nail, not a plastic one
Plastic tips are ABS. You glue them on, cut them down, and blend the seam with a file. Soft gel tips are pre cured gel, so they bond to the natural nail through the same gel chemistry you already use, and they soak off in acetone instead of needing to be filed away. That single difference is why a full set goes on in about half the time.
Gel-X is the Apres version of the system and the name most clients will use for it. The tip covers the whole nail plate from cuticle to free edge, so there is no blending and no acrylic overlay. Nothing about a soft gel tip is forgiving of a nail that was not dehydrated. Everything else on this page is downstream of that.
Six things on the table before you start
You can run this system with six products. Everything else is preference. The nail tips and glue aisle covers the tip side, and a cured gel system needs a real lamp, so if yours is older than your last two client books, the LED and UV nail lamp range is where to fix that.
Nine steps, with the cure time on each
Cure times below are for Apres Extend Gel in an LED lamp. Read the label on whatever gel you run, because a 36W lamp and a 48W lamp are not the same tool and no gel manufacturer publishes one universal number.
Size every tip before you open a single bottle
Lay all ten tips out on the table first. The right tip meets both sidewalls without pressing into them. If it pinches, go up a size and file the sides down. A tip one size too narrow is the most common cause of a lifted corner at week two.
Push back and clean the cuticle line
Any tissue left on the plate becomes a gap under the gel. Work the eponychium back and take the loose cuticle off the nail surface, not off the client.
Remove the shine with a 180 grit buffer
You are dulling the plate, not thinning it. When the whole surface has gone evenly matte, stop, then brush the dust off completely.
Dehydrate, then prime
pH bonder first, and let it flash off. Non acidic primer second, and let that go tacky. Two thin passes beat one wet one. Skipping either is the reason a set pops off clean with no gel left on the nail.
AIR DRY, NO LAMPPrep the inside of the tip
Gel-X Prep goes in the inner well of the tip and saves you etching it by hand. If you are using a tip without a prep product, scuff the inside lightly instead. A glossy inner well is a bond waiting to fail.
Thin coat of Extend Gel on the natural nail, then cure
Cuticle to free edge, leaving about a millimeter of clearance at the cuticle and both sidewalls. Gel touching skin is how a client becomes allergic to the product she is paying for.
CURE 30 SEC, LEDFill the tip and seat it at an angle
Flood the inner well with Extend Gel, then bring the tip in at roughly 45 degrees from the free edge and roll it down flat. That angle pushes the air out ahead of the gel instead of trapping it. Hold it under pressure while it flash cures.
FLASH CURE 30 SEC, LEDTurn the hand over and cure from above
The flash cure only locks the position. Full polymerization needs the lamp to reach the gel from the top of the nail.
CURE 60 SEC, LEDShape, then seal the underside of the free edge
File the length and shape you agreed on, then run top gel along the underside of each free edge and cure. That last pass keeps water from creeping in under the tip, and almost everybody skips it.

The two mistakes behind nearly every pop off
One: the tip was too small. A narrow tip leaves the sidewall unsupported and the corner starts lifting within days. Size up and file the tip down rather than forcing a snug one on. This costs thirty seconds at the start and saves a rebook you do not get paid for.
Two: the plate was still oily. Hand lotion, cuticle oil, or a nail that was buffed and then touched. If you dehydrate and the plate flashes dry unevenly, wipe and go again before the primer goes anywhere near it.
Neither failure is a gel problem, which is why buying a more expensive Extend Gel does not fix them. Two ways in, depending on your bench

Questions from the counter
How long does a Gel-X set last?
Three to four weeks with correct sizing and prep. Clients who work with their hands in water will see the free edge go first, which is why sealing the underside in step nine matters more than it sounds.
Do I need a UV lamp or an LED lamp for soft gel tips?
LED. Extend Gel is formulated for LED cure times of 30 to 60 seconds. A UV lamp will cure it, but roughly twice as slowly, and across ten fingers that difference is a real chunk of your service time.
Can you apply soft gel tips without primer?
You can, and the set will lift. Primer is what gives the gel something to hold on a plate you just dehydrated. It is the cheapest product in the kit and the one that decides whether the other five worked.
How do you remove Gel-X tips?
File the top coat off, then soak in acetone for 15 to 20 minutes. They release the same way a soak off gel does. Never pry a lifted tip, because the corner that lifted is still bonded across the rest of the plate and it will take a layer with it.
What is the difference between Gel-X and soft gel tips?
