OPI: The Icon of Professional Nail Color

Professional nail color · Est. 1981 · California, USA

OPI is an American professional nail brand that started in 1981 and today sells 200+ iconic shades in more than 100 countries. It's known for its long-wearing GelColor and Nail Lacquer, salon-grade formulas, and famously witty shade names like "I'm Not Really a Waitress."

If a client has ever pointed to a bottle and read its name out loud with a grin, chances are it was an OPI. At C8 Nail Supply, OPI is the line techs reach for when they want color that performs as beautifully as it photographs — backed by one of the most recognizable names in the salon.

The Story

OPI's story starts in 1981 with an unlikely origin: a small dental-supply company called Odontorium Products, Inc., led by George Schaeffer and Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. When they realized dentures and acrylic nails shared the same chemistry, they decided nails were a lot more fun — and OPI was born. That early era brought the "rubber band special," OPI's first acrylic system and an instant hit with manicurists. In 1989 the brand entered color with its first 30 lacquer shades, including future classics "Malaga Wine" and "Alpine Snow." The 1999 Hollywood Collection introduced "I'm Not Really a Waitress," which went on to become one of the most famous nail shades ever made. In 2011 OPI launched GelColor, bringing long-wear gel technology to salons worldwide. Today OPI is a division of the Wella Company, sold in more than 100 countries — but its obsession with color, performance, and a good pun hasn't changed.

Famously Witty Names

Tech Favorites at C8

What Techs Love About It

Across the pro community, OPI earns steady praise for three things: shade range — a deep, well-organized library that makes color-matching easy; wear — GelColor and Infinite Shine that hold up through real salon weeks; and brand recognition — clients know and ask for OPI by name, which makes shades easier to sell. It's a line that works as hard on the retail shelf as it does at the table.
