What is builder gel? How to use it in 6 steps, and when not to

What is builder gel? Builder gel is a thick gel that adds strength and shape to natural nails or tips. It cures under an LED or UV lamp like gel polish, but it builds a firmer layer that most makers design to soak off in acetone. Techs use builder gel to strengthen weak nails, build an apex, fix a break, or add length.

What is builder gel used for?

Builder gel is used for four jobs: a strong overlay on natural nails, an apex for structure, extra length over a tip or form, and repairs. Regular gel polish is thin and is made for color. Builder gel is thicker, so it holds its shape until it cures.

At C8 Nail Supply in Garden Grove, we carry over 400 items of builder gel, in jars and in brush-on bottles. The clear Cre8tion jar is the one techs order most online right now.

How to use builder gel in 6 steps

To use builder gel, prep the nail, apply a base, float a bead of builder gel to shape the apex, cure it, then file and seal it. Always follow the maker's directions for your exact product, because cure times change from brand to brand and lamp to lamp.

  1. Prep. Push back the cuticle, remove shine with a file, and clean off the dust.
  2. Base. Apply the base coat or primer that the maker of your builder gel lists, and cure it.
  3. Thin layer. Brush a thin layer of builder gel over the nail. Cure it, or leave it uncured as a slip layer if your system says so.
  4. Apex. Place a bead of builder gel near the center of the nail. Let it level, and guide it into a smooth curve. Turn the hand over for a few seconds so gravity helps the apex.
  5. Cure. Cure under your lamp for the time the maker gives. Kupa, for example, lists 60 seconds for EnrichRx in its own LED lamp and 90 seconds in a standard UV lamp.
  6. File and seal. Wipe if needed, file the shape, then add color and a top coat.

Is builder gel the same as hard gel?

No. Builder gel usually means a soak-off gel that comes off in acetone. Hard gel is a builder that does not soak off, so it is filed off instead. Both build strength and length. Hard gel is often used for longer sculpted sets, and soak-off builder gel for overlays on natural nails.

Do you need a base coat under builder gel?

Most systems ask for one. The base coat or primer helps the builder gel hold to the natural nail. Kupa applies EnrichRx after its Gelfinity Base Coat, and ORLY pairs Builder In A Bottle with its Gel Primer. Use the base the maker lists for your builder gel.

How long does builder gel last?

Builder gel lasts until the nail grows out and needs a fill, and that depends on the client. Good prep and a smooth apex matter most. IBD says its hard gel lasts for weeks. Plan a fill when the regrowth shows, instead of a full removal every time.

Removal tip from the maker: Cre8tion says to file the surface of its builder gel first, then soak in acetone for 7 to 10 minutes or longer. Kupa says to reduce the bulk with an e-file, then wrap in acetone for 15 to 20 minutes.

Can builder gel have color?

Yes. Colored builder gel builds strength and gives a soft color in one step. Milky whites and sheer pinks are the most asked for, because they look clean on short natural nails.

When not to use builder gel

Builder gel is not the right pick for every client. Skip it, or choose another service, in these cases:

  • The client wants a quick color change and no added thickness. Regular gel polish is enough.
  • The client has had a reaction to gel products. Talk with them first, and look at HEMA free formulas like the Cre8tion line.
  • Your lamp is not listed for that builder gel. Thick layers that do not cure all the way are a problem.
  • The set needs very long sculpted length. Many techs use hard gel or acrylic for that.

Builder gel also makes a strong clear base under heavy nail art, like 3D Halloween designs. See our Halloween picks for ideas this week.
